Before getting to books, I'd like to mention I'm fairly new to the list.
It is refreshing to be on a list where people discuss music, not gear.
Thanks for having me. And thanks, Reed, for hosting this list.

Anyway - BOOKS . . .

My savior was/is:
The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine - Sher Publishing - $38 (Worth every
penny and more!) 500 pages.
Levine communicates everything so well in this book. Tons of examples.
All you need.

Another succinct, but good one is:

The Jazz Language by Dan Haerle - Warner Bros. Publications - $15 - about
60 pages

Both (and others) are available through Aebersold - http://www.jajazz.com
