Mike,
Frank put together a pretty good list. I would add "So What"
to the list of modal tunes. I want to also stress the importance
of "All Blues". As it is now I hate playing that song. And it is
for the reasons I hate it that it is so important. That G7 ostinato
is the song. However the bassline is so wide open it makes me want
to play more i.e. stretch-out, fatten it up, whatever. But for me,
doing that is difficult. I have a hard time doing that and maintaining
the smooth 3/4 pocket required. I'll throw in an occasional melodic
fill, but that's about it. It's not like "Footprints" which for me
is easier to jam on, not because it's in 4, but because I can handle
it in a similar manner to typical R&B or funk. I can't even look at
"All Blues" the way I would look at a ballad, there's not really much
going on in the melody to work with. It's just a difficult song to
do more with in terms of the bassline, I find it challenging.
