Another easy way to indicate rhythm for a song would be simply to put the
'melody indicator' over the lyrics (assuming the song is known). Indicating
where the beats fall by putting ^ ^ ^ under the lyrics may help.

But I think that where this system comes into it's own is in analyzing
melodies compare the following;

Play the fifth below the tonic then play the third above the tonic
then play step wise down to the tonic.

Play 5 /3 \2 \1

which is My bon nie lays
5 /3 \2 \1
