When Gene Bertoncini did a bit of a clinic ion Ann Arbor last year he
spent some time on All The Things and, among other things noted this very
fact. He then demonstrated how one could utilize this for both ear
training and for improvising by playing a similar melody, but using the
fourth of each chord, then the fifth, then the sixth etc. Of course, when
he did it, it all sounded so musical! Since he plays the guitar finger
style, he could play the melodies against the chords. It was quite an
ear-opener.>
