Well of course, it all depends on what music you are talking about
as to how one needs to approach it.

I'm always very clear who the "great" players are to me. I've posted
lists of my favourites on many occasions. I also don't think that
there is much dispute that they players I list were "great" players.

My discussion of improvisation has been towards the classic perfomance
of solos on standard tunes. I've always been very clear in that regard.

Obviously if you are playing "So What" you are thinking modally. Similarly
for many other jazz tunes. If you are playing Wayne Shorter tunes
you are probably thinking modally on many of them.

I think you are reading more into this than is there.

I'm talking about the "non occurence" of modal playing on standard tunes
by the classic players, of which Bill Evans is right in there, someone you
say you like.

However the modern presentation of how jazz is played focusses on
chord scales (and modes), and I don't see any evidence that this was
present in those classic players.

If someone wants to play like Bill Evans or Wes Montgomery or
Stan Getz or ... and they are using connect the dot chord scale
approaches , they ain't going to get there.

I also think that it's important to qualify approaches with what players
your approach is geared towards.

I also thinks it's important to say where the approach has been used.
I.e. which recording, etc.

You might list the players you are into and explain how their approaches
are more modal or whatever.
