dissecting rhythms

So, how do we start dissecting rhythms?

On little Digi's Strut by Mark Whitfield the drummer is Herlin Riley. The
song starts with a drum intro of 8 measures. The drums are solo for the first
4, the bass comes in on bar 5, piano starts comping in bar 7 and guitar
starts the head with pickup notes in bar 8. Perhaps we can start with just
those 8 bars, just the drum part and use them to work up ways of
communicating through the list about the performance.

I'd suggest we transcribe the 8 measures, write the transcriptions down and
post the written transcriptions.
Is there a better way?

Please excuse my ignorance, I don't know the first thing about writing down
notation for drums. Can someone offer a pointer to something I could read
that explains it?
