There were numerous responses commenting on Pedro's overly complex
explanation of the Dm7 for G7 substitution, but no one really talked
about the Abm6 for G7 sub. Since the Ab melodic minor scale typically
correlates with the G-alt chord, I would tend to think of the Abm6
chord as a G-alt voicing, to which the G root could be added or not
depending on the context and the effect you were going for.
