I have also found Levine's book "The Jazz Theory Book" to be very
helpful. Almost every example is transcribed from a "real" solo, and
there are lots of examples. I find it is a book I can dip into in the
middle just to study a single concept. I also have heard his book on
piano is very good, but haven't seen it.
