We use the "Goal Note Method" at FAU in our improv classes, and find it to
be an excellent teaching tool... "goal notes" are guide tones (3rds and
7ths) plus a hierarchy of other chord tones. The method uses various ways
to approach these tones to make them sound important (such as by scale
tones, various enclosures, by arpeggio). Of course, this is best when
combined with other improv approaches, and especially with much listening,
transcribing, singing...
