I'm a retired theory teacher and a jazz trpt player and arranger. I've
thought about "What is enough theory for amateur musicians?" in the context
of jazz since long before I became a theory teacher.

Enough theory, whether learned in school or anywhere else, is what enables
you to do the following as well as you want to:
1. Know the sound (hear inwardly) of the music you see.
2. Know the sight of the music you hear.
3. Be literate at notating music.
