I agree it's different, but maybe not entirely? There is a relatioship
between chords and melodies, and I find when I'm comping that often I
get ideas for the skeleton of a melody from my comping. As touching your
advice about soloing, though, I see the point. You aren't trashing guide
tones as an important piece of musical knowledge, just doubting the
utility of guide-tone formula for soloing. I imagine there really isn't
much of a formula for great soloing.
