Soloing

I thought that I remembered someone was going to post on the use of
chromaticism in soloing. I know that this group has to date been much
concerned with chord subs and other harmonic themes, but as a
saxophonist I would like to see threads get started on soloing concepts
such as the use of chromaticism and getting "outside". Playing chord
tones and scale tones only gets you so far, and I haven't heard of a
formula (if there is one) for the use of either of these techniques.
