Floridian Ed Benson started single-handedly producing Just Jazz Guitar in
94 (it's quarterly). There are about 10 issues out now, and about 3000
subscribers. It is printed on heavy, high quality paper, black and white
format. Focuses more on traditional archtop jazz guitar than contemporary.
I think it's $12 per issue. Lots of articles on playing, players, archtops,
luthiers. Lots of transcriptions and technical discussions and interviews.
Most all the back issues, and the Joe Pass special issue, are sold out (and
appreciating in value). There is a company which buys big lots of the
magazine for resale via mail order, they sometimes have some of the back
issues. Ed is well connected among the archtop jazz guitar crowd, and a
heck of a nice guy. It's considered quite an honor to make the cover of
JJG.
I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow, feel free to email me in late December
and I'll look up the address etc. (kroger@ucla.edu). Alternatively, you
might post a query on rec.music.makers.guitar.jazz, Ed hangs out there, and
will answer you himself.
