I have been attempting to transcribe only melodies and basslines in my
initial attempts at transcription (I am a bassist). I find that
transcribing is most helpful when I take the particular application
(phrase) and try and understand the concept that is being applied. Then
I try and apply that concept in as many ways as possible. If I can do
this than that concept becomes part of my vocabulary. I am really not
talking about licks per say. Maybe the concept is octave displacement,
or perhaps it is playing a line based on chord inversions of a certain
type, etc. I am not able to absorb a whole chorus of anything at this
point in my studies. I can only take bite sized chunks of music and work
them into my head and hands.
I am about to transcribe my first solo tonight. I have to agree with
Reed, and others, that transcription is critical to musical development.
I have progressed further in a shorter time period pursuing this exercise
than any method book I have tried.
