>It occurred to me the other day as I was pondering this issue that to learn the same melodic idea in every key would predispose one to more repetitition over the course time. What is better... to spend the time to learn 5 melodic ideas in 12 keys or to learn 60 completely different ideas? In some of my transcriptions I've noticed that many very accomplished (piano)players will repeat melodic ideas in other solos on other songs and invariably I will find that they are based on the same key center. Of course, one must admire people like pianist Marian McPartland who will spontaneously play a piece in B major just for the challenge!!
