where's the time?

I notice that some of the best musicians I watch keep the time
internally (no physical manifestation). I am a drummer who is now
pursuing an interest in jazz piano and naturally tend to keep the time
in a foot but I'm having some difficulty connecting the subdivisions of
the beat to the fingers especially at faster tempos. My guess is that
these internal players don't feel the individual pulses bur are instead
sensing the downbeats of each bar and then can intuitively accurately
subdivide the entire bar. The downbeats then become the new pulse. Is
this the case?
If so, how does one master this approach?
