I was listening to NPR last weekend and they were interviewing
Don Byron who has just released a new album, "Bug Music" that contains
early Ellington and Raymond Scott tunes. He was telling about the time
he was riding in a cab with Art Farmer and someone else (name wasn't
familiar to me) and he was told that Ellington's soloists would get in
trouble if they deviated too much from their recorded solos in
performances. Evidently, it was Ellington's view that the public was
paying to hear those solos. He sounded like he was surprised at hearing
this.
Byron and the interviewer were also discussing Raymond Scott's music
in that though it can sound improvised that there were no sections for
improvisation.
BTW, the cuts they played sounded great, but I'm a big Raymond Scott
fan.
