Another excellent theory for using triads: My bass students love this:

1.) take any Dom 7th - example G7

2.) Play G, B, D - G triad (r, 3, 5)

3.) Play B, D, F - Bmb5 (3, 5, 7)

4.) Play D, F, A - Dm (5, 7, 9)

5.) Play F, A, C, - Fmaj (7, 9, 11)

Use inversions, then approach patterns:

1.) whole step above, 1/2 step below, each tone in each triad

2.) 1/2 step below each tone. ( plus any variants you can come up with)

3.) This is a pretty good way to develop ear training/technique in a musical
way when you practice such things. Use chord changes from tunes to develop
"real life" lines, instead of just theory garble.

REPEAT THESE STEPS FOR OTHER CHORD FORMS!!!
