Joey:
There is a book written by Clinton Roemer and Carl Brandt called
"Standardized Chord Symbol Notation " (A Uniform System for the
Music Profession)
ISBN 0-9612684-2-5 Copyright 1976
Selling Agent: Roerick Music Co 4046 Davana Road

Clinton Roemer has long been one of the most prominent music
copyists on the Hollywood scene, working in all fields of the
entertainment industry. Mr. Roemer collaborated with many
composer/arrangers, as well as acting as exclusive copyist for a
number of recording artist. He is also author of the best-selling
text, THE ART OF MUSIC COPYING, the most widely accepted
and comprehensive treatment on the craft of preparing music for
performance.
Of course now most of us write music by way of computer.

As my brother-in-law the book publisher likes to say "common
usage is the
final arbiter". Chord symbols have not really ever been
standardized by any
authorative body. Of all the commonly used symbols that I've seen
posted to
this list the ones from Richard Tabnik are the most correct and
comprehensive in my experience.
One symbol that is also sometimes used still (although not too often
anymore because it's ambiguous) is a 7 with a horizontal slash
through it
(aka: a European 7) Maj7.
