First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to read thru my
reharm. The reason I
submitted the chart is that I was looking for some feedback not only from
Reed but also Frank
and anyone else who might care to go thru it. My paragraph at the top of
this page was an
admittedly week attempt at humor, but in general this :-) means I'm kidding.
>I played looked through your subs and I don't have time to write a complete
>reply today but basically your subs suffer from the same problems that Franks
>on Bluesette had.

>You have some nice sounds, some interesting ideas, but they don't form
>a coherent and convincing reharmonization primarily because the bass
>line makes no sense.
I disagree, I reharm to make the melody more interesting, to change the melody
from a 1 to a #11 for example. I also reharmonize to add more movement. But
saying that
the bass line makes no sense doesn't make any sense. Who defines sense here.
>Your discussion with frank on his last subs for bluesette make me think
>that you too are being a bit too intellectual in your approach. You have
>compelling intellectual reasons to believe that certain things will
>work so you convince your ear of that.
You are accusing me of being too intellectual right after telling me my
bass lines make no sense....
>Here is something to do.
>
>Play the melody with your bass line (the bass notes of the chords you gave)
>and tell me if it sounds good.
>
>The bass line is one of the notes in the chords you have so if the
>bass line doesnt sound good neither will the substitutions (in general).
Okay, this is great advice, but guess what, I like it. We may be entering a
subjective area in musical taste here. hmmm, I noticed you have a day job
:-)
