I think John is right. There are always rationalizations to defend or
criticize based on theory but the bottom line is does it sound right?
This is a subjective area but I think that the criticism is good even if one
doesn't agree with it. It brings in to focus what an educated listener hears
and this is an important part of musical communication. In short, if enough
people agree with you when you play, you've communicated.

As to the right and wrong of it, I believe that the final analysis is always
what sounds "right". (Please don't ask me to define this.) As to the
argument of "intellectualization", this was given to the proponents of
be-bop. Miles, Bird, Monk, Diz etc. have all been accused at one time or
another of being too "intellectual".

Now I need to sit down and psych out John's changes to "Star Eyes". A great
tune!
